Datastar is an 11 KB backend-driven hypermedia framework that unifies what HTMX and Alpine.js do separately into a single cohesive tool. It uses Server-Sent Events as its primary transport, enabling real-time push updates without WebSockets or a JavaScript build pipeline. Key features include reactive signals for client-side state, DOM morphing instead of swapping (preserving focus and scroll position), out-of-band multi-region updates as the default behavior, and built-in multiplayer support without optimistic updates. The Python SDK (datastar-py) supports Django, FastAPI, Litestar, Quart, Sanic, and Starlette. The framework has no npm dependency, ships as a single CDN file, and is backed by Star Federation, a nonprofit. Version 1.0 stable is imminent with a commitment to no future breaking changes.
