Datadog released Monocle, a Rust-based real-time timeseries storage engine that unifies their metrics infrastructure. The system uses a shard-per-core architecture with LSM-trees to achieve 60x higher ingestion throughput and 5x lower query latency compared to previous generations. Monocle replaces multiple legacy storage backends including Cassandra, Redis, MDBM, and RocksDB-based systems, addressing concurrency and scaling challenges while improving cost efficiency.
