Databricks has announced the general availability of Lakebase, a serverless PostgreSQL-based OLTP database that separates compute from storage using a lakehouse architecture. Built on technology acquired from Neon and Mooncake Labs, Lakebase supports up to 8TB per instance, Postgres 17 with pgvector, instant data branching, point-in-time recovery, and unified access controls. It integrates directly with the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform, enabling transactional data to be queried by Spark and Databricks SQL without ETL. Key use cases include real-time ML feature serving, AI agent memory, and embedded analytics. Available in Autoscaling and Provisioned tiers, it is currently GA on AWS with Azure in public preview and GCP support planned later in 2026.
