Researchers have proposed building a cryogenic silicon cavity laser on the Moon, specifically in permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) that maintain naturally cold, vacuum conditions. The design leverages the same optical oscillator technology used in Earth's most precise atomic clocks and gravitational wave detectors. The lunar environment—natural vacuum, no atmosphere, and perpetual darkness in PSRs—would actually provide better conditions than Earth for maintaining cryogenic ultra-high vacuum. Potential applications include a highly precise lunar clock, optical interferometry, and scientific and telecommunications uses. Deployment could align with upcoming manned missions and Moon colony plans over the next few decades.
