Jeff Geerling tested a Raspberry Pi HAT called Firehat, which provides a 6-pin FireWire port via the VIA VT6315N PCIe-to-FireWire chipset. When connecting a powered FireWire hub, backfeeding power caused the VIA chip to fail and release magic smoke. The board was designed as a companion to the Equip-1 DV capture device without protection against backfeeding. Jeff plans to report the flaw to developers so diodes or other protective measures can be added before public release.
