Spotify's 2025 FOSS Fund awarded €70,000 total to three open source projects: FFmpeg (€30,000) for multimedia processing infrastructure, Mock Service Worker/MSW (€15,000) for JavaScript API mocking, and Xiph.org Foundation (€25,000) for audio codecs like Opus and FLAC. FFmpeg will use funds for hardware, conference travel, and development. MSW's sole maintainer Artem Zakharchenko used previous funds for living expenses while working on major architectural improvements. Xiph.org continues receiving annual support for maintaining critical audio infrastructure that powers Spotify's delivery. All three projects rely heavily on volunteer contributors and face ongoing sustainability challenges despite their widespread industry adoption.
