Every electronic communication leaves a trail by design. When a phone connects to a cell tower, a Call Detail Record is created immediately, capturing location and metadata. Similarly, web browsing logs IP addresses and domain visits at the ISP level. HTTPS encrypts content in transit but not connection metadata. VPNs shift the trail to a third party rather than eliminating it. End-to-end encryption like Signal's hides message content even from the service provider, but metadata such as who contacted whom and when remains visible. The core insight: we can make communication unreadable, but not invisible.
