(comic) Start your own business

I would have preferred if the focus of the story was on working for oneself rather than for someone else, instead of taking away someone’s motivation to have their own company. (Although it is, of course, perfectly valid to point out the upcoming challenges.)

Not every startup requires “marketing, support, HR and payroll”.
Sometimes it’s a good idea to create a side hustle and with some luck / actual demand right away it might generate more attention (and thus income) on its own with time. Just don’t rush it and let it grow naturally.
Besides, if the income isn’t there yet it doesn’t make sense to
<ul>
<li>hire someone</li>
<li>spent too much money on marketing</li>
<li>scale up the tech</li>
</ul>
A good business idea doesn’t require to spend a ton of money just to make it work.

If you have enough fund to survive for 2 yrs, then you can start your own business.

We’ve been doing it for 15 years and while the weight of responsibility can be hard sometimes, the freedom and flexibility are worth it. And while business can ebb and flow, I like knowing that I can’t be a direct victim of lay offs. I can always try and drum up new business and partnerships, and that’s a lot easier for us veteran businesses with a solid track record and lots of referrals, than it might be to try and find another job. It’s definitely a “pick your poison” type of deal, though, and not everyone is geared this way.
