The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) has officially graduated OpenTelemetry, marking it as a production-ready, vendor-neutral observability standard. Formed in 2019 from a merger of OpenTracing and OpenCensus, OpenTelemetry now has over 12,000 contributors from 2,800+ companies and ranks second only to Kubernetes in CNCF project velocity. The JavaScript and Python API packages each surpassed 1.3 billion downloads in the past year. Graduation required a third-party security audit, governance review, and demonstrated production maturity. The project is increasingly used to observe AI workloads and integrates with Kubernetes, Prometheus, Jaeger, and Fluentd. Major organizations including Bloomberg, FICO, Anthropic, and AWS rely on it for observability across distributed and cloud-native systems.
