Cloud-connected smart home gear isn't smarter, it's just slower and riskier

Cloud-connected smart home devices introduce unnecessary latency, reliability risks, and privacy concerns. Every command must make a round trip to remote servers, adding 1-2 second delays compared to the near-instant 1-10ms response of local protocols like Zigbee or Matter over Thread. Cloud dependency also means devices can be bricked when companies shut down servers (as seen with Belkin Wemo and legacy Nest products), advanced features get locked behind subscriptions, and personal behavioral data is shared with tech giants. IoT botnet attacks hit record highs in 2025, making cloud-connected devices permanent security vulnerabilities. The recommended alternative is local-only control via Home Assistant, Matter, or Zigbee, where data never leaves the home and devices remain functional regardless of internet outages.
