Cloud at 20: Cost, complexity, and control

Twenty years after AWS S3 launched in 2006, the promise of cloud computing as a cost-saving, complexity-reducing solution has largely fallen short for enterprises. Rather than outsourcing IT headaches, organizations now face spiraling costs driven by opaque billing, workload sprawl, and unpredictable egress fees. Security has grown more complex, not simpler, with expanding attack surfaces and constant upskilling demands. The multicloud reality — spanning AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and SaaS providers — compounds every challenge. Looking ahead, finops integration with DevOps, continuous security investment, and complexity management (not elimination) will define the next decade of enterprise cloud adoption.
