Simon Willison upgraded his Claude Token Counter tool to support side-by-side model comparisons. Claude Opus 4.7 introduces a new tokenizer that produces roughly 1.0–1.35x more tokens than Opus 4.6 according to Anthropic, though Willison found 1.46x more tokens when testing with the Opus 4.7 system prompt. Since pricing remains the same ($5/M input, $25/M output), this tokenizer change effectively makes Opus 4.7 about 40% more expensive for text. For high-resolution images, the token count increase is much larger (3x) but is attributed to Opus 4.7's expanded image resolution support rather than the tokenizer itself. PDFs showed a smaller 1.08x multiplier.
