Dragos' 2025 annual threat report reveals that China-backed Volt Typhoon (tracked as Voltzite) continues embedding malware in US energy networks with destructive intent, compromising control systems in electric, oil, and gas utilities. Three new threat groups emerged targeting critical infrastructure: Sylvanite (initial access broker for Voltzite), Azurite (linked to China's Flax Typhoon), and Pyroxene (linked to Iran's IRGC). The attackers are exfiltrating operational data, configuration files, and alarm information that could enable them to disrupt or destroy infrastructure. Russia-linked groups also remain active, with Kamacite conducting reconnaissance against US water, energy, and manufacturing sectors.
