China has open-sourced Origin Pilot, the first publicly available quantum operating system — the low-level software layer that actually runs on quantum hardware, calibrates qubits, and manages hardware resources. Unlike IBM and Google, which only release high-level developer tools (Python-based circuit simulators), Origin Pilot exposes the OS layer itself, allowing universities and labs with real quantum hardware to run, build on, and extend it across three hardware types. The move is framed as a geopolitical strategy: while the US relies on export controls to limit China's access to advanced tech, China is doing the opposite — giving away foundational infrastructure to pull the global research community into its ecosystem and potentially set the default standards for quantum computing worldwide.
