I really like how this teacher is looking at the arrival of AI in the world and specifically in education. He knows that AI is coming and there nothing we can do to stop this. So instead of fighting the use of AI, making students aware of what it is and how to use it is more valuable (and more entertaining) for the future of students and the teacher.

I think these AI tools are great to speed up development, but for students just learning to code I am not sure it is the best idea. Understanding how your code works is an important aspect in building software and if a lot of what you are delivering is generated by AI you likely don’t understand it.

“CheatGPT” is telling. If you’re making assignments for your students to write code, and all they do is copy and paste code from ChatGPT, they aren’t writing code. They’re stealing someone else’s work. You need to know your students know how to code, not how to copy and paste.

I teach at a University and I re-purposed one of my classes weekly discussion to be entirely driven by posts and responses generated by ChatGTP. I wanted the class to have time to experiment with the technology in a safe environment. They learned that citation and references are largely fabricated from thin air and meaningless, but the content was generally supportive of the topic and accurate (topic: Risk Management in IT Project Management). I think the class was appreciative of the opportunity to learn why the technology is assistive and not necessarily a replacement for subject matter expertise.
