Noam Shazeer, co-founder and CEO of Character.AI, is returning to Google after two years. Shazeer will join the Google DeepMind team, bringing some of his colleagues along. Character.AI co-founder Daniel De Freitas is also joining Google. Character.AI will see Dominic Perella step in as interim CEO. Google is investing in Character.AI and receiving a non-exclusive license to its technology. Character.AI, backed by $150M in funding primarily from a16z, aims to leverage third-party LLMs and focus more on post-training and new product experiences.
