A cyberattack by the ransomware group ShinyHunters disrupted Canvas, a widely used online learning platform, during finals week at US schools and colleges. Instructure temporarily took Canvas offline after detecting unauthorized network activity linked to a breach disclosed a week earlier. Data accessed included usernames, email addresses, student IDs, and messages from an estimated 275 million users across 8,800 schools. Universities including Illinois and UMass Dartmouth postponed or rescheduled final exams. ShinyHunters, previously responsible for breaches at Snowflake and TicketMaster, displayed ransom demands on Canvas login pages and urged individual schools to negotiate directly.
