Experimenting with aligned rectilinear fill patterns instead of default wall-first printing can significantly improve 3D print strength for certain materials. By extruding filament adjacent to still-hot material, layer adhesion improves. Testing showed 46% strength gains for PLA and carbon fiber PETG, but worse performance for plain PETG. The technique works best when layer adhesion is naturally weak, but can reduce strength when adhesion is already good.
