GitHub is pausing new sign-ups for Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Student plans, tightening usage limits, and removing Opus models from Pro plans. The changes are driven by agentic workflows consuming far more compute than the original plan structure anticipated — parallelized, long-running sessions now regularly exceed plan costs. Two types of limits exist: session limits (peak load protection) and weekly token-based limits (cost control). Usage visibility is being added to VS Code and Copilot CLI. Existing subscribers who are unhappy can cancel and receive a refund for April usage by contacting support before May 20.
