As demand for scalable, fault-tolerant storage grows, many organizations turn to open-source platforms like Ceph and MinIO. Both systems support erasure coding (EC) — a method for achieving data durability with less storage overhead than traditional replication — and both are widely adopted in cloud and enterprise environments.

MinIO stores object metadata directly in the file system alongside the object data. This reduces complexity and I/O overhead, but limits some advanced metadata features. Ceph stores object metadata in dedicated MON nodes and object maps, allowing advanced features like custom data placement and detailed monitoring — at the cost of increased storage and memory requirements.
<h3>Hardware Resource Comparison: A Practical Example</h3>
Storage infrastructure teams need to plan capacity not just in terms of terabytes, but in terms of how much hardware is required — including disks, CPU, RAM, and network. Architectural and erasure coding differences lead to significant variations in how much raw capacity and compute are needed.
