South Africa's Department of Home Affairs and Capitec Bank have launched self-service terminals at Capitec branches, allowing citizens to apply for smart ID documents without interacting with a consultant. The terminals use facial recognition and fingerprint verification to prevent fraud. The initiative starts with 30 branches, targeting 100 by mid-year and 300 by year-end. It is part of a broader public-private partnership with major banks to reduce queuing at home affairs offices and expand digital government service delivery. Passports and other document types are planned as future use cases.
