Capitec Bank has deployed AI tools to nearly 5,000 employees and is running an agentic AI system in its business banking credit processing operation. The bank reports average daily AI usage of four interactions per licensed employee, with generative AI now active in compliance functions. AI-driven fraud models blocked over 131,000 fraudulent beneficiaries, prevented 394,000+ scam payments, and saved approximately R673 million in potential client losses. Despite using AI to scale without proportional headcount growth, Capitec still added 711 employees (4.3% increase). The bank has elevated model risk management to a tier-1 risk and is building a responsible AI framework that explicitly flags 'black box' and agentic AI as emerging risks.
