Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, has joined the Rust Foundation as a Gold Member. The membership costs $150,000 per year and puts Canonical on the Rust Foundation’s Board of Directors, sitting below the Platinum tier occupied by Google, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft.
The move formalizes what Canonical has already been doing in practice. Ubuntu 25.10 ships uutils (a Rust rewrite of GNU Coreutils) in place of the traditional GNU Coreutils, and sudo has been replaced with sudo-rs. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will include the latest Rust compiler and Cargo in its repositories.
On the governance side, Canonical has flagged a few specific areas it wants to work on: improving the Rust developer experience on Ubuntu, keeping toolchain packages more up to date, and addressing security concerns around the <a href="http://crates.io" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">crates.io</a> package registry. That last point is particularly relevant for regulated environments, where unknown transitive dependencies in async, HTTP, and cryptography libraries are a real headache.
It’s a straightforward bet. Canonical has already committed engineering resources to Rust-based system components, so paying for a seat at the table makes sense. Whether the membership translates into meaningful influence over the ecosystem remains to be seen.
