Using fake projects in a design portfolio can be beneficial, allowing designers to showcase their skills without client constraints. The process involves using tools like Figma, MidJourney AI, and Claude AI to create realistic-looking designs. Taking it a step further by implementing the designs with HTML, CSS, or no-code tools like Framer can add credibility, especially for those with front-end development skills.

Can you use Fake Projects in your Portfolio?

Strictly, no. (from my opinion and those who agree with it)
I had 2 projects (actually, even more, but got asked for these specific 2) in my portfolio projects, which was a verified discord bot and a minecraft mod. I was asked to describe what’s these projects and what you did there, what was your role, etc. questions. Even after that, I was asked to share the website link (send the link in the chat) so the interviewer/whom was in the meeting could see it.
Now if I just didn’t had made that project, would have already done a bad impression saying “It is just a fake project to grab attention.” at the beginning. If it was a fake project and I kept lying until they say to share the website link, you could further agree with your rejection on the role you are being interviewed for because of lying and not being a true guy.
Just be a true guy. Not fair to cheat! Why fake projects?
And, if you just don’t got projects, go ahead and contribute to open-source projects. If not, then think about an amazing idea and turn it into a project.

Students trying to get a first job, sure.
Also if you want to show creativity / out of the box thinking or problem solving, go ahead.
But showing generic stuff that has no edge, that never created any value for any client and you used AI to create. Big no no.
