In this post, I want to share my experiences with the C++ programming language. Despite its historical complexities and issues, I’ve found that recent updates, particularly with C++11, have made the language more enjoyable and versatile.
Looking back, C++ has always been a challenging yet rewarding language. It’s not uncommon for programmers to reminisce about their early learning experiences with a mixture of fondness and frustration. However, overcoming these challenges often leads to a deeper appreciation and mastery of the language.
C++11, in particular, introduced substantial improvements that significantly modernized the language. Features like <code>auto</code>, <code>nullptr</code>, <code>range-for</code>, and lambda expressions have made C++ more user-friendly and adaptable to various programming needs. These updates have rekindled a renewed enjoyment of programming.
Creating a roguelike game allowed me to dive deeper into C++ and explore its vast capabilities. I found that despite its flaws, C++ offers a unique blend of productivity and creative freedom. The robust documentation and fewer constraints imposed by the community are refreshing compared to other programming environments, which can sometimes stifle creativity with stringent paradigms and rigid frameworks.
In contrast to some modern languages, which often emphasize strict adherence to particular programming styles, C++ maintains flexibility. This versatility is one of its greatest strengths, making it capable and enjoyable for a wide range of projects.

C++ Is An Absolute Blast

I love C++ as embedded engineer.
I had a problem with memory (embedded, duh) basically storing lots of float historic data for graphs and averaging.
It scales terribly with number of parameters to log, but I though - wait a second, I don’t need a big precision on this data.
So I found library named Half, and it’s basically single header only library that is 3000 lines long, but covers all possible architectures and compilers and brings down 32 bit float to 16 bit.
Best part? Because C++ has operator overloading adding it to project and replacing my usage was as simple as doing typedef and replacing float -&gt; Half after including single Half.hpp header.
0 costs abstractions are real incredible power of C++. It’s hard language, and I doubt anyone on earth (even creators) understand it fully, but at the same time it’s in my opinion best language ever.

The thig one will not find in LLM is that there is a freedom to choose the subset of C++ one likes (and needs for specific purpose).
Things that are usually criticized are easy to throw away (stuff like exceptions and RTTI can be just turned off, using compiler options, and then C++ turns into perfect language for Embedded: this is what actually Arduino did: the so called “Arduino Scripting Language” is actually… C++!)
