Bumpy is a fully open-source homemade MP3 player inspired by the iPod Shuffle. It features a scroll/click wheel UI, eight LED status indicators, and plays MP3 files from a micro-SD card. The hardware is built around an ATmega32U4 microcontroller and VS1003 MP3 decoder chip on a custom two-layer PCB designed in Eagle and manufactured by OSH Park. The firmware handles FAT32 file reading via the sd-reader library and USB mass storage via the LUFA library. The 3D-printed resin case was produced at Formlabs. All source files — firmware, PCB design, and case files — are available on GitHub, with parts costing around $58 for a single build.
