Teams deploying OpenTelemetry Collector pipelines to production lack a safe way to preview the impact of filter changes before applying them. Signal Studio, an open-source tool built by the author, addresses this by adding a three-tier diagnostic layer: static YAML analysis for misconfiguration detection, live metrics polling for runtime insights, and an ephemeral OTLP sampling tap that catalogs metric names and attributes in-memory. With this data, it can predict what a filter processor would drop before it's applied, showing estimated volume reduction percentages with confidence levels. The tool is deliberately read-only, stateless, and ships as a single binary, making it safe to run against production Collectors. It supports both legacy include/exclude syntax and modern OTTL expressions, and surfaces precise, evidence-backed recommendations for reducing telemetry cost and cardinality.
