There’s nothing like the feeling of writing code that talks directly to the hardware. 💻 I’m currently developing gvln-os, a minimalist 32-bit kernel built from the ground up.
I’ve established a robust environment using an i686-elf-gcc cross-compiler and ensuring full Multiboot compliance. The most rewarding part has been the architectural challenge of designing a stable foundation where every low-level interaction and system component—from the custom linker logic to the initial bootstrap—is meticulously planned.
<h3>Technical Progress</h3>
Direct Hardware Interaction: Implementation of a VGA text-mode driver (vga.h) to manage the 0xB8000 memory buffer, handling colors and hardware cursors directly.
Kernel Bootstrapping: A solid boot.s that handles the Multiboot header and initializes a 16KB stack before jumping to the C kernel entry point.
Memory Layout: Precise control via linker.ld, ensuring the kernel is loaded at the 1MB mark with correctly aligned sections (.text, .rodata, .data, .bss).
Build Automation: A complete <a href="http://build.sh" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">build.sh</a> script that orchestrates the compilation of Assembly and C files into a bootable ISO.
