Arch Linux's Pacman package manager may eventually be replaced by ALPM (Arch Linux Package Management), a new Rust-based project that has completed six major milestones with 15 months of funding from the Sovereign Tech Fund. ALPM provides libraries and tools for package management with full Pacman compatibility. A key difference is licensing: Pacman uses GPL while ALPM uses dual Apache 2.0/MIT licensing, which is more permissive. The transition could mirror Ubuntu's sudo-rs implementation, where the Rust version runs underneath while users continue using familiar commands.

Stop rewriting C and C++ code bases in Rust. There are unlimited projects written in Interpreted Languages or Virtual Machine Languages with Garbage Collection, that can be rewritten in Rust. Manual Memory Managed Projects, do not need a Rust rewrite, they are already High Performance. The Rust rewrite provides no benefit to these projects. The Rust community needs to learn where it is actually needed.

The more I see how Big $ Tech companies use open source solutions, the more of a GPL-style licensong proponent I become. Why not? Why not keep the GPL-style license here as well?
On the other hand, while I love Rust, I don’t think doing major rewrites of everything in it is the way to go. I mean, yeah, it might be a brearh of fresh air here and there, but does Pacman really need replacement?
If anything, that Rust-based package manager could be a step into unifying the whole fragmented package management ecosystem. On the other hand (again 😋), unification in OSS seems impossible and kind of against the spirit of it (“don’t like it? need something more? fork it and do it”).
Just my random thoughts on the matter, I guess. 😁

Seems that Rust is going the way of Hollyweird. Unable to think of anything new, it instead rehashes programs that have been working perfectly well. And in doing so, also does away with the original licence, handy that.
Go fix something that’s broken for a change.

Rewrite the Gentoo package manager please, it is base on python, at least 100x time slower then pacman (but who care that PM performance? your will block for package compile for 5~8 hours to do a full system upgrade).
