GitHub has released the bring your own language model key (BYoK) feature for GitHub copilot Business and Enterprise users in VS Code. This allows teams to reuse existing API keys from providers like anthropic, OpenAI, Google gemini, OpenRouter, and Azure, as well as locally running models via ollama and foundry local. BYoK models are available in VS Code chat and custom agents, but not for code completions. Usage is billed directly by the chosen provider and does not count against copilot request quotas. The feature is enabled by default and can be disabled by organization administrators.
