A group of Taiwanese university students, mentored through the ALC Taipei (OpenSource4You) community, revitalized Apache Mahout by introducing the Quantum Data Plane (QDP) framework that bridges GPU and quantum computing. Starting from a single student's first patch, the effort grew into a team of committers and PMC members, produced academic papers, and is now preparing to mentor the next generation through GSoC 2026. The story highlights how community mentorship and 'The Apache Way' philosophy enabled young contributors to make a global impact on a dormant open source project.
