MIT researchers developed injectable brain implants smaller than cells that can navigate blood vessels without surgery. The devices use near-infrared light for power and attach to immune cells (monocytes) using click chemistry to cross the blood-brain barrier. In mice trials, these hybrid chips successfully targeted inflamed brain regions and delivered electrical stimulation on demand. The technology, called circulatronics, could enable minimally invasive treatment for Alzheimer's, depression, and brain tumors, with clinical trials planned within three years through spinoff company Cahira Technologies.
