Bookmarking

A detailed exploration of the shortcomings of browser-based and social bookmarking tools, covering issues like poor semantic understanding of bookmarked content, lack of offline access, synchronization risks, and the limitations of both hierarchical folders and free-form tagging. The author argues for a richer bookmark manager that understands what content represents (books, places, etc.), supports controlled vocabulary tagging across multiple facets, works offline with local data copies, and leverages aggregate user data for recommendations. Written as a product rationale for a closed-beta web app called Recall.
