BMW Group is deploying humanoid robots in production for the first time in Germany, launching a pilot project at its Leipzig plant in collaboration with Hexagon Robotics and its AEON robot. This follows a successful pilot at BMW's Spartanburg, USA plant where Figure AI's Figure 02 robot worked 10-hour shifts over 10 months, handling over 90,000 sheet metal components across 1,250 operating hours during BMW X3 production. BMW has established a new Center of Competence for Physical AI in Production to consolidate expertise and scale these efforts globally. The initiative is part of BMW's broader iFACTORY strategy, integrating AI agents with physical robots to handle monotonous, ergonomically demanding, or safety-critical tasks, with the goal of complementing existing automation and improving working conditions.
