A developer discovered that OpenSSH's scp command overwrites the permissions of an existing target directory to match the source directory's permissions. When transferring files from a local directory with 777 permissions, scp silently changed the remote home directory to 777 as well. This caused sshd to reject public key authentication because it enforces strict ownership/permission checks on the home directory. The fix was reverting the home directory to 700. The bug was reported to OpenSSH and a fix was pushed within hours, slated for release in version 10.3.
