South Africa is bringing several major renewable energy projects online in 2026, adding hundreds of megawatts to the national grid. Key projects include the Virginia Solar Park (275MWp), the Mulilo Total Hydra hybrid facility with 216MW solar and 500MWh battery storage, and the first standalone grid-scale battery storage facilities from government procurement. Additional projects from developers like Scatec, Red Rocket, Engie, and Infinity Power are reaching financial close or starting construction, representing over 2GW of new capacity. These developments aim to improve energy security, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and support private-sector electricity participation.
