Isovalent Enterprise for Cilium 1.16 introduces Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) to enhance Kubernetes cluster availability by quickly detecting network failures and rerouting traffic. BFD establishes peering sessions between endpoints, sending frequent heartbeats to monitor path integrity. This feature aims to reduce downtime and improve resilience compared to traditional BGP timers. A demo environment using containerlab illustrates the significant improvements in failure detection and traffic rerouting with BFD enabled.
