Navigation 3 is Google's new alpha navigation library for Android and Kotlin Multiplatform that replaces NavController with direct backstack manipulation. Key improvements include owning the backstack as a data structure, type-safe destinations using kotlinx.serialization, scenes for adaptive layouts (like two-pane tablet views), and better view model integration. The library supports custom scene strategies for different screen sizes and introduces decorators for extending navigation behavior. While promising for flexible navigation control, some features like scenes currently have stability issues in the alpha release.
