Be honest: do you really think that Rust is hard ot learn?

Yes, I started as a C programmer and i’m very familiar with low level programming. It’s abstracted enough to be annoying that I’m not in control but not enough to just handle it for me. And the syntax is horrible

The language is not, the syntax is!

First, I really did like the video. I think you have a very good point about unlearning. A lot of your video feels more about “why Rust is better than C++” , not “why Rust might not be as hard to learn as you thought.”
The thing is, Rust is hard to learn, but not because Rust is inherently difficult. Rust is hard to learn because:

<li>Writing any code worth writing requires a fair amount of foundational knowledge</li>
<li>The tutorials out there for Rust really aren’t the best for new learners</li>
<li>Rust has some nomenclature that can really trip people up.</li>
<li>The syntax makes sense when you know the language, but very little when you’re starting. It isn’t intuitive.</li>
</ol>
**I’m not a rust developer. **But I’ve tried it in the past and gotten very confused very quickly. Cargo? Crates? Modules? Traits? Mutability? Which folder do my files go in?
So to be fair to you, I took what you said in your video and decided to crank out the same program in both C++ and Rust, just using google search results, to see which would take me longer. I didn’t even try python or javascript, because I think that comparison is really unfair.
My program goal: abstract out a basic “Hello World” program main, and an external class with two properties and a single void returning method.

Summary of what I found:

<li>Getting the C++ to work required less work and less googling</li>
<li>Rust was much more flexible and boy did I like its approach</li>
<li>Rust was much more verbose and picky.</li>

So were you right? Kinda. I had to dig through a bunch of pages about how there are different kinds of structs and how to use <code>impl</code> and what <code>traits</code> are and to your point – coming from a <code>C90</code> background was what tripped me up. But Then I thought about if I was a new developer and I realized that the material for a complete newbie wasn’t good either. It’s all a bit esoteric.
So I would say yes, Learning Rust is Hard, but it’s really that learning cliff that your diagram illustrated so well. I don’t think C programming gets hard once you hit your first segfault, though, it gets tough when you’re a first level CS person and you’re trying to wrap your brain around pointers. &quot; <code>*</code> ? I thought that was for multiplication??&quot; Rust hits you right out the gate with &quot;Let’s add a <code>cargo.toml</code> file and let you figure out what that does lol. I realize adding a file doesn’t make the actual development difficult, but it adds brain fatigue, and I think that’s my summary:
“Learning Rust is Hard, because there is so much to learn early, that it causes a lot of brain fatigue. This is especially true when comparing it learning to code in higher level languages like javascript or python.”
Anyway, I want to thank you. Because of your video and challenge I’ve written more Rust today than I have in my life and it has been on my hitlist of things to try (again). For anyone else reading this or coming to this video and you want to learn rust,
