The Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) has identified two AGPLv3 violations by Bambu Lab. First, Bambu's networking library `libbambu_networking`, which ships with Bambu Studio (built on AGPLv3-licensed PrusaSlicer/Slic3r), has never had its source code released as required. Second, Bambu threatened a developer who built an OrcaSlicer fork to communicate with Bambu servers, claiming its terms of service override the AGPLv3 license — itself a violation of the license's anti-restriction clause. In response, SFC launched the 'baltobu' project with three repositories: reverse-engineering the proprietary networking library, a Bambu-compatible OrcaSlicer fork, and a Bambu Studio fork. SFC also plans ongoing watchdog activity, a standing committee on 3D printer software freedom, and a fundraiser targeting $250,007 by July 2026.
