An analysis of NYC Subway hourly ridership data from 2025 compared against National Weather Service severe weather events. By plotting ridership profiles for bad weather days against typical day-of-week baselines, four patterns emerge: weather events with no impact on ridership, suppressed ridership due to non-weather factors (e.g., day after Christmas), genuine weather-driven travel suppression (e.g., flash flooding), and a surprising fourth case where the first snowfall of the season actually increased weekend subway ridership as New Yorkers went out to enjoy the snow.
