Azure SQL Managed Instance's General Purpose tier received a major upgrade through storage replatforming, delivering 2-3x performance improvements at no additional cost. The Next-gen GP tier offers halved latency (4ms to 2ms), tripled IOPS, and increased throughput while doubling storage limits to 32TB and supporting up to 500 databases. New independent scaling controls allow users to adjust memory and IOPS separately from vCores, enabling more granular resource management and cost optimization. Existing customers can upgrade with a single toggle, though it requires a one-time data migration operation.
