Microsoft has launched the Azure DevOps Remote MCP Server in public preview. Unlike the local MCP Server, this hosted version uses streamable HTTP transport and requires no additional setup or installation. Configuration is as simple as adding a server URL to your mcp.json file. Currently, it supports Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code with GitHub Copilot, with authentication handled via Microsoft Entra (standalone MSA organizations are not supported). Support for additional clients like Claude Desktop, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, and ChatGPT is coming soon, pending OAuth Client ID dynamic registration in Entra. Microsoft also plans to eventually archive the local MCP Server repository once the Remote MCP Server reaches general availability.
