AWS experienced a major outage on October 19-20 affecting 35-40% of traffic in the US-East-1 (Virginia) region. The root cause was an internal monitoring tool reporting false health statuses, which incorrectly updated DNS records and prevented services from connecting to DynamoDB. Since many AWS services (IAM, Lambda, Step Functions, API Gateway) depend on DynamoDB for metadata storage, the cascading failure impacted the entire region. Retry storms from SDKs and applications prolonged recovery beyond AWS's 2-hour fix window. The outage may trigger SLA credits for customers, and while multi-region architectures provide protection, they should be evaluated against cost and actual business impact rather than implemented reactively.
