AWS has launched a standalone Sustainability console that consolidates carbon emissions reporting with its own IAM permissions model, a new API, configurable CSV exports, and Scope 1-3 emissions data broken down by service and Region. Previously embedded in the Billing console, the tool now gives sustainability teams direct access without requiring billing permissions. The new API enables programmatic integration into dashboards, reporting pipelines, and compliance workflows, which is especially relevant for CSRD compliance in Europe. AWS CTO Werner Vogels positioned carbon as an architectural metric alongside latency, cost, and error rates. Critics note the API only provides monthly aggregates rather than real-time data, limiting its usefulness for edge and IoT architectures.
