You deploy your function. It works. Traffic hits it.
Then you need to roll back.
And you realize — you can’t. Not cleanly. Not without downtime.
That’s the problem with deploying Lambda directly. No history. No traffic control. No safe rollback path.
Lambda Versions &amp; Aliases fix all of that.
Here’s what most teams are missing:
🔒 Versions are immutable snapshots of your function code + config. Deploy once, it’s locked. No surprises in production.
🎯 Aliases are named pointers to versions. Think of them like Git branches — except they route live traffic.
The real power? Weighted routing.
You can send 90% of traffic to v5 and 10% to v6 — a true canary deployment. No infra changes. No separate environments. Just Lambda config.
The pattern looks like this:
• $LATEST → dev/testing only (never point prod here)
• v3, v4, v5 → immutable, tagged releases
• prod alias → points to current stable
• canary alias → weighted split during rollout
One alias flip = instant, zero-downtime promotion.
One weight rollback = instant traffic shift back.
If you’re pointing production directly at $LATEST, you’re one bad deploy away from a silent incident.
