AWS has introduced a powerful new feature in its Database Migration Service (DMS) that leverages generative AI to automate schema conversion tasks. This innovation aims to simplify and expedite the process of migrating commercial databases to PostgreSQL, including Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible Edition and Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL.
By utilizing large language models, the new capability can handle up to 90% of schema conversion tasks, particularly those involving complex code objects such as stored procedures, functions, and triggers. This significantly reduces migration costs and accelerates project timelines. DMS Schema Conversion blends traditional rule-based and generative AI methods according to the complexity of the migration, providing users with both flexibility and improved efficiency.
Currently, this feature is available in select AWS regions, specifically US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), and Europe (Frankfurt). Users can activate the generative AI-powered schema conversion as needed to optimize their migration processes.
In addition to this schema conversion enhancement, AWS has also announced the general availability of MemoryDB Multi-Region and introduced new observability features for Amazon Aurora MySQL and PostgreSQL through Amazon CloudWatch Database Insights.
