Modern electric grids face growing reliability challenges as inverter-based resources (IBRs) like wind, solar, and battery storage replace traditional synchronous generators. Manual generator performance verification using PMU data is no longer scalable given the frequency of disturbances and fleet sizes. Regulatory frameworks including NERC BAL-003-2 and FERC Orders 842 and 901 mandate rigorous frequency and voltage response monitoring. Automated tools that process PMU and SCADA time-series data can detect events, quantify frequency response measures (FRM), evaluate droop behavior, and track voltage response measures (VRM) across entire fleets in near-real time. Aion Pulse, developed by Simple Thread in collaboration with PNNL and funded by the U.S. DOE, commercializes the Generator Scorecard research tool to deliver these capabilities, reducing engineering workload and improving NERC compliance.
