Austrian startup REPS has raised $23.6m to scale its Road Energy Production System, which embeds mechanical converters into roads to harvest kinetic energy from braking trucks. The company's first commercial unit has been operating at the Port of Hamburg since November 2025, with over 115,000 truck crossings generating 6,700 kWh. REPS claims its converter is 254 times more efficient than competing systems, though no independent benchmarks exist yet. The funding will support rollout to ports, logistics hubs, and cities, with the company in talks with 90+ port operators globally. Larger projections — including powering 5% of world electricity demand from road traffic — are modelled estimates, not measured results.
