It’s often the case that stakeholders think they know the solution to a problem but they don’t have the experience to look at all available options. Additionally, engineers have more knowledge of the system’s inner workings that can lead to interesting solutions that the stakeholder is unaware of.
Don’t just be a programmer. Being a software engineer is not only about coding. Coding is easy. It’s also about problem solving so it should be your responsibility to come up with alternative solutions to problems, and the stakeholder’s responsibility to trust that the engineer may have knowledge they are not privy to. It’s a two-way street.
So asking “why?” is a very important step in any discussion about a new function or feature request. Not only does it help you - as the engineer - to understand what problem the stakeholder is trying to solve, but it often also explains the reasoning behind the stakeholder’s proposition. In the same way that stakeholders are often unaware of technical details that might provide a better solution, engineers are often unaware of business and customer issues that the stakeholder is trying to solve, making the feature seem unnecessary at first glance.
